Don’t get too focused on moving up: Instead focus on consolidating and building your skills and evaluating what it is that you enjoy and can do well. Look for where you can make an impact, where you can grow and look for your own personal mission.
Think outside your title: Try to think outside of the title you’re going for and evaluate your skills and what you as an individual can bring to the team. When looking towards your career goals, the best thing you can do to get there is not to look for a direct climb. Move sideways if it means building new skills. Lori goes on to comment that had she approached her career as a straight path, she very well could have missed it.
Take as many opportunities as possible: Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook recently said that in early days at Google, Eric Schmidt famously said to her, “when you’re offered a seat on a rocket, don’t ask what seat, just get on”.
At Blue Sky Careers, we firmly believe in the importance of getting runs on the board, working hard and showing your value. Put your hand up for new projects that come your way, even if you think they are initially above your skill level. This is your opportunity to learn and grow professionally while demonstrating to your employers what you are capable of.
